‘Mind Your Head’ BFA Sculpture Exhibition in Quigley

Clarke University senior Hannah Goldsmith’s Bachelor of Fine Arts Sculpture Exhibition, titled “Mind Your Head,” is currently on display through April 30 in the Quigley Gallery on the Clarke campus.

An artist reception for Goldsmith, of Dyersville, Iowa, will be held from 3-4:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 23, in the gallery.

Goldsmith’s artist statement reads:

“Anxiety and fear. For most, simply getting past the cause of the stress can relieve them of these emotions. But for others, the anxiety lingers, unattached to a specific instance, haunting a person’s everyday life and filling their world with excessive apprehension. In my show, “Mind Your Head,” I compare anxiety disorders to dangerous birds.

“I chose bird imagery because, although the fear of birds is relatively common, they are not typically regarded as particularly dangerous. In a similar manner, anxiety disorders are common, but typically not understood or acknowledged as a legitimate concern. Birds have also been used as symbols surrounded by myth throughout history. Many, especially those with dark coloration, are seen as bad omens and harbingers of death. Playing off of these superstitions, I chose bird species that are largely dark in color in addition to their dangerous behavior.”

The gallery is open noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday; 1-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
