Clarke University Students Win at the AAF Dubuque American Advertising Awards

By Clarke News  |  March 1, 2019

Clarke University students in the graphic design program received 17 gold and silver awards, four out of the five Judge’s Choice awards, and the Best of Show award at the Dubuque Chapter of the American Advertising Awards on Friday, February 22, at the Diamond Jo Casino in Dubuque.

Clarke student winners include Laura Reiss, Hannah Ingles, Charlotte Rodewald, Adinah Hopkins, Tessa Greenwood, Emily Koetz, Nick Becker, and Reilly Gillette.

Charlotte Rodewald took home Best of Show in the category of Out of Home Poster for her piece entitled “Ed’s Chuck Wagon.”

Rodewald said, “It was thrilling to get my first gold. I could not even imagine I would get Best of Show; it was a bit surreal. My work has improved so much since coming to Clarke and my teachers have always supported me, pushed me to do my best. The piece that won Best of Show is a good example of how they have encouraged me to work outside of my comfort zone. How well Clarke did at the American Advertising Awards in Dubuque is a testament to the high standard instilled in us by the Art + Design Department.”

Clarke student Emily Koetz was named the annual American Advertising Federation’s scholarship winner.

Louis Kames, chair and professor of art, said, “We are pleased to see the distinctive excellence and creativity of our graphic design student work acknowledged by our region’s design professionals. The repeated Clarke University Art + Design student success in this annual award program speaks to the high quality of instruction and professional atmosphere that exists here.”

Eric Wold, associate professor of graphic design, added, “I am proud to support such a dedicated and passionate group of art and design students. Their vigilance, determination, and professionalism clearly shows through in the work they produce each year.”

In addition to student winners, Clarke University’s Marketing and Communication Office earned a silver award for the Clarke magazine’s “Celebration of Clarke’s 175th Year” issue.

Also at this event, Pat McCullough, Business Manager at McCullough Creative, received the prestigious Member of the Year Award. McCullough received his MBA from Clarke University in 2017.

The American Advertising Federation (AAF) is a national non-profit organization, promoting and protecting the interests of advertising and public relations. Locally, AAF Dubuque is the affiliate to the national organization and AAAward competition. The mission of the competition is to recognize and reward creative excellence in the art of advertising.
