Over the Rhine in concert at Clarke University April 6

By Clarke News  |  March 5, 2018

The Edward J. and Cathy Gallagher Arts at Clarke series is proud to present Over the Rhine in concert Friday, April 6 in Jansen Music Hall on the campus of Clarke University. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. and doors open at 7 p.m.

Over the Rhine is an American, Ohio-based folk music band featuring the husband-and-wife team of Linford Detweiler (piano, guitar, electric bass, vocals) and Karin Bergquist (vocals, piano, guitar). The band’s namesake and place of origin is the Cincinnati, Ohio neighborhood Over-the-Rhine. According to their website, the neighborhood has changed immensely in the last decade, and some credit the band for taking away the negative connotations of the place and opening peoples’ eyes to the ragged beauty of those angular streets.

“Over the Rhine, a world-class band whose longevity spans nearly thirty years, continues to evolve and produce some of the most well-crafted music in the industry,” says Joe Klinebriel, Arts at Clarke committee chair. “Audiences who are fortunate enough to experience this group’s concert at Clarke are in for a truly moving musical experience.”

Over the years, they have toured and recorded in many variations. They have shared the stage with Bob Dylan, John Prine, Adrian Belew, and Ani DiFranco.

“Karin and I write songs that allow her voice to bloom, and we find musicians who know how to take what we do and make it spark and breath, twitch and moan,” says Linford Detweiler of Over the Rhine. “We try to work with musicians who inspire us, people whose company we enjoy. And we try to write music that in little ways helps to heal the wounds that life has dealt us or the wounds we’ve dealt ourselves. … We try to write words that help us learn to tell the truth to ourselves and others. That’s a big part of all this. Music is a wonderful platform for discovering what we believe is true. But Over the Rhine is ultimately the music that Karin and I find within and without for her to sing.”

Paste Magazine praises their “lovely, heartbreaking, and ultimately uplifting musical mosaic.” The Washington Post applauds their “understated, country-tinged charm.” The Wall Street Journal describes their album, Meet Me at the Edge of the World, as “subtle and elegant, with airy musical arrangements and breathtaking vocal harmonies that fit the title of the album.”

Tickets for the concert are $20 can be purchased online at clarke.edu/artsatclarke/overtherhine or by phone at (563)588-6377.
