Clarke Offers Full Slate of Summer Camps, Academies

Clarke University is proud to host summer academies and camps for middle school and high school age students. Our academies and camps will be hosted on the campus of Clarke University and will be directed by Clarke University faculty, staff and skilled professionals in the computer science and music industries.

CULINARY BOOT CAMP
FOR ENTERING GRADES 6-9, JUNE 2-5
8 a.m. – noon (lunch included)
This camp will teach the basics of food, flavor, cooking, and the value of learning how to “play with your food.”  Culinary boot camp attendees will also learn to bake bread and make homemade ice cream. Attendees will prepare a meal to serve to their parents and guests at the conclusion of the camp.
Cost: $150. Camp charge includes all meals, recipe book, t-shirt, and apron.

CLARKE NURSING CADETS
FOR ENTERING GRADES 6-9, JUNE 10-12
At Clarke’s first nursing academy, participants will be exposed to various nursing specialties and learn how a nurse provides basic everyday skills through a hands-on experience with a high fidelity simulator. Basic first aid skills will be taught and the academy will culminate with a tour at a local health care facility.
Cost: $125. Academy charge includes meals, field trip related expenses, and t-shirt.

FOOD SCIENCE ACADEMY
FOR ENTERING GRADES 10-12, JUNE 29-JULY 2
Residential/overnight academy (non-resident option is also available)
If you cook, you are a scientist! If you are a scientist, you can learn to cook! At Clarke’s Food Science Academy, participants will learn how the worlds of food and science intertwine. Participants will explore new tastes and smells and how to pair them, and brave the extremes of heat (propane torches at 3000°F) and cold (liquid nitrogen at -300°F).
Cost: $450 for residential participants and $325 for non-resident participants.  Academy charge includes meals, overnight accommodations, field trip related expenses, a textbook, and an apron.
Discount for Clarke Alumni, Faculty, and/or Staff: $405 for residential participants and $292 for non-resident participants.

COMPUTER SCIENCE ACADEMY
FOR ENTERING GRADES 9-12, JUNE 29-JULY 2
Residential/overnight academy (non-resident option is also available)
With recent advances in applications in social media, health care, manufacturing, gaming and automation, it is important that students learn about the issues involved with apps, security and management of mobile and streaming media, as well as the hardware interface. The summer academy will cover all the above areas while students actively engage in hands-on experiences to:

•    Learn how to design and build their own apps
•    Learn how to build and program their own computer
•    Learn how to build augmented reality applications

The above skills are essential in many technology careers including software engineering, networking, virtual reality, game development and automation.
Cost: $325 for residential participants and $200 for non-resident participants. Academy charge includes meals, overnight accommodations and t-shirt.
Discount for Clarke Alumni, Faculty, and/or Staff: $292 for residential participants and $180 for non-resident participants.

SOCIAL WORK ACADEMY
FOR ENTERING GRADES 9-12, JUNE 29-JULY 2
Residential/overnight academy (non-resident option is also available)
At Clarke’s first social work academy, participants will learn about the social work profession, issues of social justice, and opportunities to get involved in the community. Participants will engage in daily service-learning experiences, which may include working with senior citizens, children, individuals with disabilities, and low-income communities.
Cost: $325 for residential participants and $200 for non-resident participants. Academy charge includes meals, overnight accommodations, field trip-related expenses and t-shirt.
Discount for Clarke Alumni, Faculty, and/or Staff: $292 for residential participants and $180 for non-resident participants.

DUBUQUE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA STRING CAMP
FOR ENTERING GRADES 7-9, OR STUDENT MUSICIANS WITH A MINIMUM OF 2 YEARS ENSEMBLE EXPERIENCE, JUNE 23-28
Clarke University – 9a.m.- 3 p.m.
Guest-artist Diego Piedra Carvajal from Costa Rica will be returning to work and perform with students throughout the week, along with a fantastic faculty of DSO musicians. Students will receive one-on-one lessons, rehearse and perform in ensembles, attend group discussions geared to their musical interests, and much more! The camp will culminate with a performance at the DSO’s Summer Melodies concert at the Dubuque Arboretum.
Tuition Assistance is available, and all student who are a member of a DSYE ensemble are eligible for a 20% discount on tuition. Households with multiple students in attendance will also receive a discount on tuition (please contact the DSO office for more information.)
A non-refundable deposit of $125 is due with registration. Tuition must be paid in full to the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra by the first day of camp.

DUBUQUE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA SUMMER CHAMBER MUSIC CAMP
FOR ENTERING GRADES 10-12, (ADVANCED 9TH GRADERS AND GRADUATED SENIORS WELCOME), JUNE 23-27
Clarke University | 12:30 p.m. – 5 p.m.
Geared toward high school string players who want to refine and broaden their musical skills, the Summer Chamber Music Camp gives students the opportunity to work closely with guest-artist Diego Piedra Carvajal, and a great faculty of DSO musicians. Students will receive one-on-one lessons, ensemble coachings, special topics classes and much more! The camp will culminate with a showcase performance featuring both camp students and faculty.
Cost: $175 (includes a t-shirt and sheet music.)
