34th Annual Golf Classic Supports Local Scholarships

By Clarke News  |  June 13, 2022

The 34th Annual Clarke University Golf Classic was held at the Dubuque Country Club on June 6, once again offering an entertaining day of golf and camaraderie in support of scholarships for local students. The event also included an online auction, allowing alumni and friends of the university from around the country to take part.

This year’s event was co-chaired by Poppy Conlon and Roux Conlon Loar ’01, ’12M, who led fundraising efforts alongside fellow volunteer Andy Schroeder ’01, ’10M and the staff of Clarke’s Mackin Institutional Advancement Office. Through community support, they were able to raise over $80,000.

Clarke has long been an important part of my life,” Conlon Loar said. “As a two-time graduate of Clarke, I have received an outstanding education and I am honored to co-chair this year’s event with my sister, Poppy.”

With the tremendous support provided by our sponsors and donors, this year’s Clarke Classic Scholarship recipients will receive a strong educational foundation—preparing them to achieve their career aspirations and lead fulfilling lives. Thank you to all of our event supporters for being an important part of their future success.

Conlon Construction generously led the way as our presenting sponsor and was joined by over 30 other businesses in supporting the event through sponsorships and donated online auction items, including everything from a private BBQ and Brews party at Jubeck New World Brewing to an all-access pass to the South by Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas.

This year also saw the addition of the “Spring Swing” event on May 18, which allowed sponsors and friends of Clarke who were unable to golf an opportunity to visit campus and show their support in other ways.

“This is a beloved tradition, and we continue to find new ways to encourage all our alumni and friends to participate,” said Bill Biebuyck, Vice President for Institutional Advancement. “Whether it is on the course, through the online auction, or connecting with us on campus, the Golf Classic is a great way to celebrate Clarke and invest in the future of its students.”

Established by Therese Mackin, BVM ’50 in collaboration with Bernadine Giesler ’43 and Sonia Hickson, and Babe Bisignano, funds raised by the Golf Classic first supported the construction of the Robert and Ruth Kehl Center and now underwrite scholarship support for incoming students from the tri-state region. Each student is awarded a renewable scholarship for up to four years.
