Clarke Summer Camps Cater to All Ages

By Clarke News  |  May 16, 2025

This summer, Clarke University is proud to partner with area organizations to bring unique learning experiences to students of all ages through its summer camps series. As we near the end of registration, we’re highlighting four academic options that you and your family won’t want to miss!

Summer Literacy Camp: For over a decade, the Clarke Education department has worked with area students to develop their love of reading through games and activities. This four-week day camp may be hosted at Resurrection School, but it is open to all Dubuque area students entering grades 1-6. Sessions begin June 10.

With support from faculty and Clarke students—including traditional undergraduate students and members of Clarke’s Accelerated Elementary Education program—campers will work in small groups on core reading skills. These sessions offer encouragement and coaching to everyone from developing readers to those who already have a deep love of literature.

Wellness Camp: Clarke’s Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program developed their Wellness Camp based on strategies and lessons from their doctoral work.  DNP students, along with Associate Professors of Andrea (Stacey) Simmons ’01, ’08M, ’16DNP, will guide campers ages 8-11 in exploring the building blocks of overall health in this fun and engaging one-day session on Thursday, June 19.

After breaking into small groups, students will participate in activities such as nature walks, mindfulness practices, first aid, reading and understanding food labels, and more. As part of the event, students will also explore and use tools in the Clarke Nursing Simulation Lab, which mimics a real hospital.

Writer’s Workshop: New for this summer, Dr. Gina Burkhart, Director of Learning Services and Instructor of First-Year Studies at Clarke is opening a Writer’s Workshop. In a casual, small group atmosphere, Gina will guide students entering grades 10-12 in developing their writing skills and their voice as an author.

This week-long session runs from 10 a.m.-noon Monday July 21 to Friday, July 25. Each day will include discussions of good writing, feedback and critiques, and how to incorporate revisions. The week will conclude with a public reading of student work for the BVM Sisters at Mt. Carmel on Saturday, July 26. This camp is free to all attendees, but they must submit an application by June 13 to be considered.

Game Development with Virtual Reality: Gaming Development with Meta Quest VR introduces students to not only video game development but also user experience in virtual reality. Under the guidance of Computer Science Instructor Joshua Moris, students entering grades 10-12 will work together to research and develop virtual environments. Students will meet each day July 28-August 1 from noon-4 p.m. This camp is free to all attendees, but they must submit an application by June 13 to be considered.
