Clarke University Hosts Military Enlistee Recognition Ceremony for Eastern Iowa

Clarke University proudly hosted the first annual High School Graduate Military Enlistee Recognition Event on Saturday, May 17. The event honored 46 graduating seniors from across 20 Eastern Iowa communities who are about to enter service in the U.S. Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force.
Held in partnership with Our Community Salutes – Eastern Iowa, the event brought together approximately 150 family members and guests for a moving and patriotic celebration of service and sacrifice.
The keynote speaker, Command Sergeant Major Jorge Escobedo, senior enlisted leader at the Army’s Sustainment Command in Rock Island, shared his inspirational personal story—from a challenging youth in Mexico City to a transformative military journey in the U.S. Army, culminating in a senior leadership role and a college degree. His message of resilience, determination, and service captivated those in attendance.
Clarke University President Dr. Fletcher Lamkin, a retired Army Brigadier General and combat veteran, emphasized the shared values between military service and Clarke’s mission, noting leadership, character, integrity, and commitment to community. He also acknowledged Clarke’s long-standing support of student veterans, underscoring the university’s dedication to those who serve.
Each enlistee was recognized and presented with a Certificate of Appreciation from U.S. Senator Joni Ernst, a veteran herself. The certificates were a highlight of the ceremony, resonating deeply with both the enlistees and their families.
The ceremony was organized by Denny Coll and Matt May of Our Community Salutes – Eastern Iowa. Given the enthusiastic turnout and community response, organizers are already considering additional recognition events in more locations across Eastern Iowa for next year.
This event was made possible by generous support from local organizations, including Hy-Vee Grocery Store, which contributed refreshments for guests and families.
