Teaching philosophy: Teaching is a partnership between student and instructor. It is the teacher’s job to share his/her passion for the subject and to show the student why the material is worth their time. In return, it is the student’s job to learn by making the effort to actively engage with the subject.

Clarke’s impact on Michael: Clarke is very student-centered, so I work hard to think of my students first when I am teaching or advising. This might mean crafting assignments or activities that will grab their interest or designing projects that they can use later in their professional lives.

Michael’s impact on students: I work hard to show them that I care about them, both as students and as people.

Michael’s favorite:

Movie – The Royal Tenenbaums

Book – Angle of Repose by Wallace Stegner

Quote – “If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe.” Carl Sagan

Class in college – Robert Kerby’s History of the Civil War at the University of Notre Dame. It was legendary.

Place traveled – My favorite trips have been to Boston and Washington, D.C.

Hobby – I am a very good amateur baker.
