Communication (advertising/public relations, journalism)

The communication department offers a communication major with concentrations in either public relations/advertising or print journalism as well as a contractual (arranged) major that includes multimedia, broadcasting and other fields. A general communication minor is also available. The curriculum for the major prepares students to apply communication theory and mass media skills to corporate, institutional, governmental and other organizational communication situations, including  the mass media. The minor provides communication background and skills to enhance a student’s major.

The program combines a theoretical foundation in the traditional liberal arts and communication studies with demanding sequences of specialized courses in applied communication studies and media skills. The curriculum develops journalistic, advertising and public relations skills enhanced by a background in communication history, law, social responsibilities and an ability to apply communication-oriented computer technology.
