Teaching Philosophy

My job is to recognize what experiences and knowledge my students bring to the classroom. From there, my role is to facilitate a safe, caring environment where students feel comfortable sharing, questioning, reflecting and learning.

The faculty and staff at Clarke are genuinely caring and supportive of students and each other. The environment at Clarke is one that fosters and encourages growth for students and faculty alike. I thoroughly enjoy working at Clarke.

Professional Background

My teaching experience ranges from kindergarten through college. Previously I served as an art teacher and principal at The David School, in David, Kentucky, and a K-6 special education teacher for Dubuque Community School District. I am currently in my sixth year at Clarke. I teach mainly special education methods courses in the professional development school. I love that my position allows me to work with Clarke pre-service teachers, K-12 educators, and K-12 students. It’s the best of both worlds!

Research Interests

I am passionate about advocating for students with special needs, but my current research interest is to examine the impact service-learning and project-based learning has for students at risk, more specifically, students in poverty.
