Clarke Choir to Perform at St. Columbkille Prior to Europe Trip

The Clarke University Collegiate Singers will perform in the Prague Choral Festival in The Czech Republic in July. Before they leave they will give a preview of that concert on Friday, July 1, at 7:30 p.m. at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Dubuque.

The concert is free and open to the public.

The Collegiate Singers, Clarke’s mixed ensemble, along with three instrumentalists, will perform at the Museum of Czech Music in Prague on July 10. Clarke is one of only four U.S. universities that will perform at the festival. The goal of this festival is to gather people together who love music, share musical experiences, play unforgettable music together, create memories and enjoy the city of Prague. The four U.S. university choirs will combine with seven choirs from the Czech Republic, forming a choir of over 300 singers; this mass choir, accompanied by Clarke pianists Sharon Jensen and Jeremy Mims, will perform in Smetana Hall, which is one of the preeminent concert venues in the world.

Prior to performing in Prague, the Clarke choirs will perform at Parish Church of Groeben in Berlin, Germany, on July 4, and at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, Germany on July 6.

Mims, assistant professor of Music at Clarke, is the conductor of the Clarke choirs.

“Tradition is so important to us at Clarke University,” Mims said. “Over the years, we have traveled with student groups to Ireland, Japan, India, Soviet Union, Poland, Czech Republic and Puerto Rico. We are continuing that legacy with this trip.”

“I am so grateful for this amazing opportunity,” said sophomore Jennifer Pohlman, choir member and physical therapy major. “I have never been out of the country, and I am very fortunate to be able to sing in college and travel the world. Choir has taken me to California, Hawaii and, now, here I go to Germany and Prague.”
