Professional experience: Prior to joining Clarke as an assistant professor in social work, I worked for the University of Wyoming Fay W. Whitney School of Nursing as a project director with the Wyoming IDeA Networks for Biomedical Research Excellence Program. Prior to that, I worked as a project manager for LEAP from RN to MS: Preparing Nurse Educators, a HRSA funded project at UW. Specific to the social work profession, I worked for the UW’s Division of Social Work from 2007-14 both as a graduate teaching assistant and a lecturer teaching various courses in the social work curriculum that included: Social Work Practice with Communities & Organizations; Introduction to Social Work; Human Behavior in the Social Environment; and International Social Work & Social Development.

Teaching philosophy: As the instructor, I am always prepared to share knowledge, to facilitate discussion and activities, to provide learning opportunities, and to evaluate the course and students’ effort. My teaching philosophy is primarily based on the idea that I must set high academic standards for both my students and myself as my mentors did for me. I always strive to be the best educator that I can be.

Clarke’s impact on Mary: Clarke University is dedicated to the promotion of intellectual growth through an academically rigorous education grounded in the liberal arts. It is an institution that embraces diversity, provides students with a wealth of opportunities that allows them to broaden their intellectual capacities and has a focus on service. As a scholar who is so passionate about diversity and social justice, my commitment is to provide students with the knowledge base to work and live in a diverse and global society.

Mary’s impact on students: My teaching focus include: social work policy, research, social work with communities and organizations, and human behaviors in the social environment courses. In addition, I have expertise in other social work-related areas that include: grant-funding process, social work practice with vulnerable population, health and mental health.
