Degrees earned: Bachelor of Science in Education at Loras College; MA with a focus on Inclusion Education at University of New England; currently pursuing a doctorate in special education.

Professional experience: Rebecca currently teaches in Clarke’s Special Education Professional Development School (PDS) program at Table Mound Elementary. She also teaches special-education methods courses on campus. She was a special-education teacher at Sageville Elementary before coming to Clarke. During her time at Sageville, she worked with children in every grade level,K-6, in general and special-education settings.

Teaching philosophy: My role is to facilitate the development of a safe environment where students feel comfortable sharing, questioning, reflecting and learning.

Clarke’s impact on Rebecca: I look forward to coming to work every day! I love my job, my colleagues, my PDS teaching partner, Paula Schmidt, my students, and the sense of community at Clarke. The faculty and staff are genuinely caring and supportive of students and each other. The environment at Clarke is one that fosters and encourages growth for students and faculty alike. I have grown both personally and professionally since coming to Clarke and have made some life-long friends. I love it so much … I wish I could live here! …well, kind of… J

Rebecca’s impact on students:I believe in teaching students how to advocate for themselves and for their future students because many opportunities are lost when we don’t have the courage to speak up. I hope to make a lasting impact and be remembered as passionate, caring and approachable; not the teacher that bestowed her knowledge upon her students, but the one that got her hands dirty with them. I learn as much from my students each semester as they do from me. It is an awesome responsibility! I feel honored and blessed to be in such a position.

Rebecca’s favorite:

Movie – Shawshank Redemption

Book –A Voice in the Wind from the Mark of Lion Series by Francine Rivers

Quote – “And the turtles of course … all the turtles are free - as turtles and, maybe, all creatures should be.” Dr. Seuss.

Class in college – Anything having to do with art. I love teaching, but I am an artist at heart!

Place traveled– I’ve been all over… but I am most excited about an upcoming trip back to the David School in the Appalachia Region of Kentucky. This is a mission trip with Clarke education students.

Hobby – I love painting…anything. I paint pictures, signs, murals, floors, furniture etc. I also enjoy construction projects at home. I recently added a bathroom in an empty attic space in my house and I am currently remodeling a four seasons porch. I also enjoy gardening and canning.
