Professional experience: Diana has also taught courses at the University of Iowa, Kirkwood Community College and Coe College. She has nearly 20 years of work experience in journalism, public relations, and editing positions. She has also acted as a business writing consultant and taught business writing workshops to major Iowa companies. She has written numerous freelance articles on improving business writing, contemporary authors, language learning and travel.

Teaching philosophy: When I set goals as I teach on a daily basis, I think in terms of the skills and theoretical background students will need on the job based on my own work experience in various settings. A list would include basic writing and editing skills, knowledge of page layout software and page design as well as printing terms and processes (to be able to talk knowledgeably to a printer), how to work with clients to determine what they want and need in a project, familiarity with the basic history of mass media, major shaping events and current trends in journalism, and persistence in pursuing information and knowledge of Internet research. Students also y need to know how to work as a team in a job setting, meet deadlines, and act professionally. And, of course, in today’s age of “information glut” students need to know more than ever how to draw on their liberal arts background to sort through and critique information in terms of usefulness and reliability.

Clarke’s impact on Diana: Clarke has taught me how to make my teaching truly student-centered.
