Award-Winning Student

Why did you choose Clarke?
Originally I chose Clarke for its esteemed physical therapy program. However, from the minute I stepped on campus, I knew Clarke was where I belonged. Its warm and welcoming atmosphere allowed for me to make a positive and efficacious transition from high school to college.

Of the other activities you are involved with, how have they added to your college experience?
Being involved in activities that Clarke offers allowed for me to meet new people and form relationships that have helped make my college experience enjoyable. During volunteer experiences, I have been able to affect people's lives in a meaningful way that I otherwise would not have been. I am truly grateful for that. I would encourage everyone to get involved and volunteer as much as they possibly can!

Did you receive financial aid? If so, how did it help you?
I do receive financial aid, and it has helped me tremendously. Financial aid has allowed for me to receive a higher education, and pursue my dream of becoming a physical therapist. I am truly thankful to all of Clarke University's generous benefactors.

What do you enjoy about campus?
I really enjoy how the buildings are connected. It's definitely comforting to know that I don't have to go outside to get to my next class when it is raining, snowing, or just really cold outside.

What do you like about Dubuque?
I've lived right next to Dubuque my entire life, so it feels very normal to me. Although Dubuque has a larger population, it doesn't seem that way; it still feels like a small town. People are generally kind and courteous to each other—making it a pleasurable place to live.

Do any faculty/staff members stand out?
I can honestly say that I have been tremendously influenced in some manner by all of the professors I have had at Clarke, and by many of the other faculty/staff members as well. Each and every one of my professors has not only helped me grow academically, but has helped me grow as an individual—teaching me valuable life lessons, some of which have had a profound influence on my behavior and beliefs.

So far, what has been your most memorable Clarke experience?
I think my most memorable experience was when I received the St. Catherine Medal at the 2012 Student Honors Banquet. I had put a significant amount of time and effort into my application, but knew that the other applicants had put forth the same, or possibly even greater, amount of time into their applications. I was hopeful that I would be the recipient, but definitely did not expect it. Consequently, hearing my name called as the recipient for the award and going up to shake President Joanne Burrows's hand was an experience that will remain forever embedded in my head.

If you had the chance to tell a prospective student one GREAT thing about Clarke, what would it be?
I would say that Clarke is a unique university that focuses not only on academic growth, but on growth as individuals, as well. The faculty and staff truly care about each and every one of the students that attend Clarke. They challenge them to reach their full potentials, achieving what they never thought possible.
