Criteria for Selection

The Nancy Dickerson Whitehead Medallion is awarded to an outstanding professional in mass communication. The criteria for the award flow from Nancy Dickerson Whitehead's extraordinary life accomplishments in the field of mass communication and from the ideals and goals of Clarke University as expressed in the Clarke University Mission Statement.

Criteria for selection of the outstanding professional to receive this award are as follows:

  • This individual, as with Nancy Dickerson Whitehead, must have been recognized as having made remarkable differences in people's lives through profound accomplishments in the field of mass communication.
  • This individual, as with Nancy Dickerson Whitehead, must have demonstrated extraordinarily high personal initiative in the field of mass communication. The honoree must be perceived as having a creative aggressiveness expressed through extraordinary performance which serves as a model for other professionals in the field of mass communication.
  • This individual, as with Nancy Dickerson Whitehead, must have had a dream that is expressed in high standards for quality in her or his own work.
  • This individual, as with Nancy Dickerson Whitehead, must have taken risks and broken barriers in mass communication through articulate and informed decision-making while pursuing career goals.
  • This individual, as with Nancy Dickerson Whitehead, must have demonstrated self-knowledge, self-confidence, and self-motivation, in taking initiative and leadership by using his or her ability to speak out and express autonomous opinions as a responsible member of a world community.
  • This individual, as with Nancy Dickerson Whitehead, must be recognized as successful in the contemporary world.
