Clarke Nursing Students Win Competition at Mayo Clinic

posted on March 23, 2006

Three Clarke College graduate nursing students were recently awarded first place in the poster competition at the first Mayo Clinic Graduate Nursing Research Student Conference in Rochester, Minn., on March 7. A scientific poster presentation is a visual presentation of research and findings associated with it.

Students Kim Bro, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Joan Copper, of Coggon, Iowa; and Lisa Thuerauf, of Mt. Vernon, Iowa, presented the poster, entitled “The Male Nurse Experience in Nursing: A Qualitative Study.” The group’s original research was conducted with men who are nurses. The men participated in a focus group and were asked to describe their experiences as men in a predominately female occupation. The study is still in progress.

All three of the presenting students are in the nurse educator track of the master of science in nursing program at Clarke. The students were advised by Mickie Wimmer, DNS, an associate professor of nursing at Clarke.
