Music Ministry Program Requirements

The following program requirements are from the Clarke University 2012-2012=3 Academic Catalog and apply to students currently enrolled. MAJOR REQUIREMENTS

For a Bachelor of Arts (BA) Degree in Music Ministry, a student completes 53-64 hours of music and religious studies courses, including:

  • MUSC 261 Music Theory II
  • MUSC 262 Sight Singing and Ear Training II
  • MUSC 355 Conducting I
  • MUSC 361 Music Theory III
  • MUSC 362 Sight Singing and Ear Training III
  • MUSC 371 History and Literature of Music III
  • MUSC 471 History and Literature of Music IV

Emphasis Courses in Music

  • At least one of the following:
    • MUSC 241 Instrumental Techniques: Voice/Guitar
    • MUSC 245 Instrumental Techniques: Percussion/Strings
    • MUSC 246 Instrumental Techniques: Woodwinds/Brass
  • At least one of the following:
    • MUSC 138 Composition I
    • MUSC 315 Art of Accompanying
    • MUSC 367 Orchestration and Arranging

Applied Courses in Music

  • MUSC 113 Keyboard Skills* (up to 4 semesters)
  • MUSC 131 Applied Studies: Voice OR
  • MUSC 132 Applied Studies: Piano

Other instrument**

*   If proficiency is demonstrated in keyboard skills, Applied Piano is recommended.
** 6 semesters of a primary instrument are required. A secondary area is encouraged.

APPLICATION TO MAJOR

Ordinarily, a student may apply for a major in music ministry upon successful completion of MUSC 161 Music Theory I, MUSC 162 Sight Singing/Ear Training I, 2 credits in applied music, 2 semesters of ensemble experience, RELS 100 Foundations of the Spiritual Life and one additional religious studies course.
