COURSE DESCRIPTIONS: ENGLISH
ENGL 121 APPROACHES TO LITERATURE 3 hours
Interpretive reading of poems, short stories, literary nonfiction, and plays. Choice of specific selections kept variable. This course is a prerequisite for all other literature courses. This course is designated as a humanities division general education course.
ENGL 209 TOPICS IN WRITING 3 hours
Provides opportunities for further study and practice in expressive, expository and persuasive writing across disciplines. Readings of modern essayists. Optional research paper. Prerequisites: GNED 110, GNED 111.
ENGL 210 CREATIVE WRITING 3 hours
Provides opportunity for creation of short fiction, poetry, dramatic script and literary nonfiction. Includes individual discussion of student writing as well as group work. Course culminates in production of a portfolio. Prerequisites: GNED 110, GNED 111.
ENGL 212 POETRY 3 hours
An introduction to techniques, forms and themes of poetry. Prerequisite: ENGL 121 or SPAN 121. This course is designated as a humanities division general education course.
ENGL 215 BRITISH LITERATURE 3 hours
Chronological study and analytical reading of a wide variety of selected British texts, from "Beowulf" to Virginia Woolf. Prerequisite: ENGL 121 or SPAN 121 or consent. This course is designated as a humanities division general education course.
ENGL 218 U.S. LITERATURE 3 hours
Chronological study and analytical reading of a wide variety of literary texts extending from early Native American to present multicultural Americans. Prerequisite: ENGL 121 or SPAN 121 or consent. This course is designated as a humanities division general education course.
ENGL 219 WORLD LITERATURE 3 hours
Introductory literature course focusing on texts produced outside of North America. Students will read texts translated into English from the original language. Texts will include examples of ancient and modern literature from several different cultures and societies. Prerequisite: ENGL 121 or SPAN 121 or consent. This course is designated as a humanities division general education course.
ENGL 222 SHORT FICTION 3 hours
Reading, analysis and discussion of short stories and novellas, both classic and contemporary. Prerequisite: ENGL 121 or SPAN 121. This course is designated as a humanities division general education course.
ENGL 231 LITERATURE OF DIVERSITY 3 hours
Focuses on a multicultural selection of North American texts primarily written in English. The course features readings from a variety of races and ethnic groups. Students will read mostly works written in the 20th and 21st centuries Prerequisite: ENGL 121 or SPAN 121 or consent. This course is designated as a humanities division general education course. This is an approved diversity studies course.
ENGL 232 POPULAR LITERATURE 3 hours
In this general education course, students will examine representative examples of popular literature. Texts may include works written in different eras for different types of readers. Different modes of literature may be examined (novels, short stories, plays). This course is designated as a humanities division general education course.
ENGL 243-244 SHAKESPEARE 3-3 hours
Selected comedies, tragedies and history plays. Prerequisite: Minimum six hours literature or consent.
ENGL 280 TOPICS IN LITERATURE 3 hours
Study of selected texts focusing on a particular literary theme, group, and/or genre. Topics vary in order to accommodate students’ needs. Recent topics have included African-American literature, autobiographical writings, regional authors, mystery writers, science fiction and women in literature. Prerequisite: ENGL 121 or SPAN 121.
ENGL 292 INTRODUCTION TO LITERARY CRITICISM 3 hours
Oral and written practice in analysis and literary evaluation of selected works using methods of current schools of literary criticism. Prerequisite: Minimum six hours literature or consent.
ENGL 309 ESSAY WRITING 3 hours
A nonfiction writing course that provides opportunity for development of essay writing skills with a focus on the personal essay; includes discussion of student writing as well as analysis of contemporary essays. Prerequisites: GNED 110, GNED 111.
ENGL 311 PROFESSIONAL WRITING 3 hours
Intended for students already in control of the essentials of composition who wish to develop their ability to write effectively for professional purposes. Prerequisites: GNED 110, GNED 111.
ENGL 315 WRITERS’ ROUNDTABLE 3 hours
Writers’ Rountable invites serious student writers to work toward completion and revision of manuscripts in a writer’s workshop format. Such manuscripts might include collections of short stories, chapbooks of poetry, full-length plays, or novels. Student writers will also engage in reviewing the work of other student writers toward revision. This course may be taken more than once for credit. Prerequisite: GNED 110/111 CORNERSTONE I, II
ENGL 345 BRITISH NOVEL 3 hours
Reading and discussion of representative British novelists. Prerequisite: Minimum six hours literature or consent.
ENGL 347 AMERICAN NOVEL 3 hours
Readings and discussion of novels representing various cultures; works selected from significant American authors. Prerequisite: Minimum six hours literature or consent.
ENGL 395 INTERNSHIP/COOPERATIVE EDUCATION 1-3 hours
Academic credit for professionally related work experience. A maximum of six semester hours may be applied to the English major or writing minor. No hours may be applied to the English minor.
ENGL 460 19TH CENTURY BRITISH LITERATURE 3 hours
Study of texts of major 19th century writers. Prerequisite: Minimum nine hours literature or consent.
ENGL 461 MODERN BRITISH LITERATURE 3 hours
Study of texts of major 20th and 21st century writers. Prerequisite: Minimum nine hours literature or consent.
ENGL 463 U.S. LITERATURE 1820-1870 3 hours
Study of selected texts. Prerequisite: Minimum nine hours of literature or consent.
ENGL 464 U.S. LITERATURE 1870-1920 3 hours
Study of selected major works. Prerequisite: Minimum nine hours literature or consent.
ENGL 465 U.S. LITERATURE 1920-PRESENT 3 hours
Study of texts of major 20th and 21st century poets and fiction writers. Prerequisite: Minimum nine hours literature or consent.
ENGL 480 TOPICS IN LITERATURE 3 hours
Advanced study of selected critical problems in literary texts, choice of which is kept flexible from semester to semester in order to meet current needs and interests of students majoring in English. Prerequisite: Minimum nine hours literature or consent.
ENGL 499 English Integration Capstone 3 hours
This course provides a focal point for and closure to a liberal arts education within the context of the major discipline. As a departmental offering, this course focuses on discipline-specific topics and expands to include breadth of knowledge and synthesis. Interdisciplinary integration of knowledge is emphasized. General education and major outcomes are integral to course assessment. Students will finalize the writing components of their senior portfolio. They will research and present the senior performance oral communication portion of the English portfolio. Prerequisites: Ordinarily, a student must have junior or senior standing with a minimum of 42 credit hours in general education completed.
