Communication Program Requirements

The following program requirements are from the Clarke University 2012-2013 Academic Catalog and apply to students currently enrolled. MAJOR REQUIREMENTS

For a Bachelor of Arts (BA) Degree in Communication with an Emphasis in Journalism or Public Relations/Advertising, students must complete a total of 48 hours of core courses including 12 hours in the emphasis sequence of their choice.

  • 30 hours of core courses:
    • COMM 100 Mass Media and Society
    • COMM 101 Mass Media Writing and Editing OR
    • COMM 200 Editing 
    • COMM 102 Publication Production and Design
    • COMM 112 Digital Audio-Video Production
    • COMM 116 Digital Photography/Photojournalism OR
    • COMM 240 Field Digital Photography
    • COMM 201 Advertising
    • COMM 202 Public Relations
    • COMM 230 Communication Practicum
      (for a total of 3 credits or approved course at the 200- or 300- level)
    • COMM 380 Communication Law and Social Responsibility
    • COMM 499 Communication Capstone
       
  • 6  hours of supporting courses in addition to core and emphasis courses:
    • COMM 240 Field Digital Photography
    • COMM 270 Photoshop
    • COMM 305 Web Design (required for PR/Advertising)
    • COMM 320 Internet Search Applications
    • BUMG 112 Principles of Management OR
    • BUMK 220 Principles of Marketing

For students completing Journalism emphasis

  • 12 hours of  journalism courses:
    • COMM 104 News Reporting and Writing
    • COMM 200 Editing
    • COMM 301 Freelance Article Writing
    • COMM 310 Magazine Development and Production

Note: The journalism sequence is not available to TimeSaver students.

For students completing Public Relations/Advertising emphasis

  • 12 hours of PR/advertising courses: 
    • COMM 305 Web Design
    • COMM 401 Advertising Design and Production
    • COMM 402 Public Relations Writing
    • COMM 487 Integrated Advertising-Public Relations Campaign

Students may complete both sequences for a Bachelor of Arts (BA) Degree in Communication with an Emphasis in Journalism and Public Relations/Advertising.

MINOR REQUIREMENTS

For a Minor in Communication, students complete the following 21 credit hours.

  • COMM 100 Mass Media and Society
  • COMM 101 Mass Media Writing and Editing OR
  • COMM 200 Editing
  • COMM 102 Publication Productions and Design
  • COMM 201 Advertising OR
  • COMM 202 Public Relations
  • COMM 270 Photoshop OR
  • COMM 320 Internet Search Applications
  • COMM 380 Communication Law and Social Responsibility
  • Approved COMM elective course (200 level or above)

A minimum grade of C is required in each communication course to fulfill major and minor requirements.

APPLICATION TO MAJOR

Prior to applying for admission to the communication major or minor, a student must have successfully completed 30 hours of university course work. The following courses must have been completed with a minimum grade of C.

  • COMM 100 Mass Media and Society
  • COMM 101 Mass Media Writing and Editing OR COMM 200 Editing
  • One of the following courses:
    • COMM 102 Publication Production and Design
    • COMM 104 News Reporting and Writing
    • COMM 116 Digital Photography/Photojournalism
    • COMM 201 Advertising
    • COMM 202 Public Relations

COOPERATIVE EDUCATION INTERNSHIPS

Students have many opportunities to work in real-world settings. Internships and cooperative education placements are available to all students and are an important part of a student’s professional preparation. Internship opportunities have included newspapers, magazines, local radio and television stations, publishing companies, public relations and advertising agencies, political parties, government agencies and other communication-related organizations. Many students secure internships in the Dubuque area, in their hometown and elsewhere throughout the United States.

COMPUTER LITERACY REQUIREMENT

Majors are required to complete general education technology proficiency and one of the following courses: COMM 270 Photoshop, COMM 320 Internet Search Strategies or COMM 305 Web Design.

RESEARCH REQUIREMENT

Research papers are required in COMM 100 Mass Media and Society, COMM 201 Advertising, COMM 202 Public Relations, COMM 380 Communication Law and Social Responsibility, COMM 487 Integrated Advertising- Public Relations Campaign.

SENIOR PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENT

In COMM 499 Communication Capstone, seniors are required to submit a professional portfolio containing presentations of applicable work in photography, newswriting, editing, page design, graphics, public relations writing, and advertising copy and design. All students give a formal presentation of their portfolio explaining the selection, arrangement and significance of its contents. Electronic and hard-copy formats are required.
