"For A Blessed Christmas" Set for December 7-8

NOVEMBER 19, 2013: The Clarke University Arts at Clarke Series and the Clarke music department will present “For a Blessed Christmas” on Saturday, December 7, and Sunday, December 8. The Saturday performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. and the Sunday performance will begin at 2 p.m.

Staged in the beauty of Clarke’s Sacred Heart Chapel, “For a Blessed Christmas” is a moving portrayal of the Christmas story through an exciting mix of narration and musical performances. This holiday tradition is a favorite in the Dubuque area and features performances by each of Clarke’s vocal and instrumental ensembles.

This year’s edition will feature baritone Robert Hee Pyong Oh, a noted opera performer and recitalist.

Clarke’s ensembles will perform seasonal music from the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Ireland, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Nigeria and the United States. Included in the performance will be an Ave Maria written specifically for Clarke’s women’s chorus, Cantabile, and the world premiere of the gorgeous Irish carol Don Oiche Ud I mBeithil, set for Clarke’s Schola by composition student Adam O’Dell.

The Clarke Collegiate Singers will sing two very different lullabies, the Dutch Hoe Leit dit Kindeken and the African American spiritual Hail Mary, in addition to joy-filled works derived from West African sources.  The Clarke Winds will begin each performance with a lovely setting of J.S. Bach’s version of the great Advent hymn Wake, Awake, for Night is Flying.

Tickets are $10 and can be reserved by calling (563)584-8642 weekdays between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
