The Clarke College Physical Therapy Department, along with Sinclair 5 Point Mart and Perfection Oil, will participate in “Wheels for the World,” a national program to collect wheelchairs, walkers, canes or crutches for people with disabilities in a developing country.
This is the first time a collection has been held in Dubuque. Donations will be accepted on Friday, Oct. 20, and Saturday, Oct. 21, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. The drop site at Clarke will be in Catherine Byrne Hall on the Clarke campus. The other drop site will be the Sinclair 5 Point Mart on Rhomberg Avenue in Dubuque. For more information about donating a wheelchair, call the Clarke College Physical Therapy Department at (563)588-6618.
“Wheels for the World” is a program of Joni and Friends International Disability Center. As of 2005, the program has distributed over 35,000 wheelchairs to over 70 countries and has trained hundreds of ministry and community leaders, including people with disabilities.
Wheelchairs are collected in any condition and are meticulous restored in the United States by carefully trained inmates in nine separate correctional facilities in Colorado, Tennessee, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, Kansas, Ohio, Louisiana, Arkansas, and California. These prisons include federal, state, and private institutions.
The restored wheelchairs are then shipped overseas to meet up with short-term missions teams, who custom fit each wheelchair specifically for each recipient and train him or her in wheelchair use and upkeep. Wheelchair recipients have also presented with a Bible.
