Drama Production Selected for Regional Kennedy Center Festival

Benefit Performance Scheduled for Jan. 18

Dec. 21, 2012: Clarke University announced today that the drama department's fall production of The Glass Menagerie has been selected to participate in the Kennedy Center's regional American College Theater Festival (ACTF). The festival will take place on Jan. 20-26, 2013, at the University of Nebraska - Johnny Carson School of Theater & Film in Lincoln, NE.

On Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, Clarke drama department will hold an encore performance of The Glass Menagerie. The event will serve as a benefit to raise funds needed to attend this year's ACTF event. The performance will be at 7:30 p.m. in Terence Donaghoe Hall at Clarke University. Admission is free. Donations will be accepted.

The Kennedy Center program began in 1969 to "encourage, recognize, and celebrate the finest and most diverse work produced in university and college theater programs". Clarke University participates in ACTF Region 5, competing among schools in Iowa, Minnesota, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota and North Dakota. Each year, the ACTF Region 5 typically reviews over 200 entries and selects four productions for performance in their regional festival.

Clarke drama productions have won numerous ACTF awards in recent years. In 2012, The Caretaker was selected to perform. The production received regional honors for set design, and went on to win the national award for director and student actor. At the 2011 festival, Clarke's production of Eurydice won regional awards for student poster design and student set design. And, in 2008, Agnes of God was selected to perform.

Clarke Drama's production of The Glass Menagerie opened on Oct. 5, 2012, and was the first production of the academic year. Clarke's student newspaper, The Courier, noted at the time that the play featured non-traditional stage sets and an original score by cast member Adam O'Dell '14. The score is also expected to compete for honors in this year's festival.
