Clarke Physical Therapy collecting Wheels for the World

April 18, 2013: Clarke University’s Physical Therapy Department is participating in an All-Iowa Wheels for the World (WFTW) wheelchair drive Friday and Saturday, April 26-27. Clarke’s physical therapy students have made it their mission to collect as many unwanted or broken wheelchairs, walkers, canes and crutches as possible. WFTW offers an alternative option to a landfill for those looking to dispose of unwanted or broken items while still making a positive impact on the lives of those less fortunate.

The items collected through this effort will be given to the nonprofit organization Wheels for the World. WFTW collects wheelchairs and foldable walkers, metal canes and crutches and has them refurbished by inmates at a correctional facility in Kansas. Chairs are then shipped worldwide where teams of physical or occupational therapists, wheelchair mechanics, translators, administrative helpers and general assistants help distribute the wheelchairs. The gift of wheelchairs or other assistive devices is capable of transforming the life of a person with a disability.

Individuals can donate a used foldable wheelchair or walker, metal crutches or canes to the cause.  Drop off items at Clarke University in Catherine Byrne Hall on Friday, April 26, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., or Saturday, April 27, from 8 a.m. to noon. Arrangements can be made to have these items picked up. Those who wish to donate or have questions are encouraged to contact the Clarke University Physical Therapy Department at 563-588-6382 or email Bill.ODell@clarke.edu.
