Acclaimed Journalist Lisa Ling to Present Clarke’s Mackin-Mailander Feature Lecture

posted on January 11, 2011

Clarke University is pleased to announce that acclaimed journalist Lisa Ling will be the featured speaker in this year’s Mackin-Mailander Lecture Series focused on impacting positive social change. The lecture will be held on Sunday, March 27, and information regarding tickets will be available later in January.

As the field correspondent for the “Oprah Winfrey Show” and former contributor to ABC News' “Nightline” and National Geographic’s “Explorer,” Lisa Ling has reported from dozens of countries; covering stories about gang rape in the Congo, bride burning in India and the Lord's Resistance Army in Uganda, among other issues that are often ignored.

Ling uses her role as a journalist to focus on positive social change. At Clarke, she will present “Open Heart, Open Mind,” discussing her own career path, how journalism plays an important role in the world around us, and how, as times continue to change, it can be a force for propelling the world forward in new and positive ways.

Ling got her start in journalism as a correspondent for Channel One News where she covered the civil war in Afghanistan at age 21. She later went to become a co-host of ABC Daytime's hit show “The View,” which won its first daytime Emmy during her time at the show. In 2011, Ling will have her own series on the new channel, OWN: the Oprah Winfrey Network called “Our America with Lisa Ling.”

Ling was a special correspondent for CNN's “Planet in Peril” series and is a contributing editor for USA Today's “USA Weekend” magazine.  She is the co-author of “Mother, Sister, Daughter, Bride: Rituals of Womanhood” and “Somewhere Inside: One Sister’s Captivity in North Korea and The Other’s Fight to Bring Her Home” that she penned with her sister Laura.

The Clarke University Mackin-Mailander Lecture Series was established in the spring of 1997 after Clarke received gifts from two alumnae, Mary Mackin ’34 and Verna Slattery-Mailander ’20, to establish an endowed lecture series. The annual series consists of three lectures, including a prominent outside speaker, a faculty lecture and an alum lecture.
