Clarke Honors Heroes with Veterans Day Concert

posted on November 9, 2009

The Clarke College Wind Ensemble will present a musical tribute to area veterans on Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the Jansen Music Hall on the Clarke campus. Admission is free and the public, especially veterans and their families, are invited to attend.

The concert will feature patriotic songs that honor veterans. Selections will include “Tribute,” a selection honoring all women who have served in the American armed forces; “Arlington,” a soft and beautiful note of respect to Arlington National Cemetery; and the traditional “America the Beautiful.” Members of the Clarke ensemble will be also be accompanied by members of the College of Dubuque Band.

At this year’s event, the Color Guard from American Legion Post 6 in Dubuque will contribute their services and senior music education major Ben Drury, who served in the Iraq war and is the son of a veteran, will perform a trumpet solo from Karl King’s piece, “Sons of Veterans.”

Veterans Day was originally known as Armistice Day, which signaled the end of World War I. In 1984, it was changed to Veterans Day to honor all those serving in the Armed Forces and veterans of all wars.
