When students move-in to a residence hall, they contain typical furnishings such as a desk, chair and bed. In an effort to continually promote environmental responsibility, Clarke College recently added a new piece of furniture to each residence hall room on campus – a recycling bin.
Primary funding for the initiative was provided through a grant from the Dubuque Metropolitan Area Solid Waste Agency (DMASWA). Various organizations on the Clarke campus also supported the project, including Clarke Leading Environmental Action Now (CLEAN).
“Giving students the tools needed to recycle in their room offers many benefits,” said Summer Zwanzinger Elsinger, Ph.D., a Clarke resident director who wrote the grant that funded the initiative. “It allows students to visually see how much recycling and waste they truly produce while helping them see the ownership they have in making environmentally friendly choices. The program is helping us reduce waste, provide environmental learning and live the mission of Clarke College.”
