posted on March 20, 2008

Clarke College will host the faculty lecture of this year’s Mackin-Mailander Lecture Series on Tuesday, April 1, at 7:30 p.m. in Jansen Music Hall on the Clarke campus. “You Call That Art” will be presented by Clarke Assistant Professor of Philosophy Tom Riley, Ph.D. and Instructor of Music David Resnick, MME. The lecture is free and the public is invited to attend. The lecture was originally schedule to be held in March, but was postponed due to illness.

In a back-and-forth presentation that is liberally flavored with multimedia and performance elements, David Resnick and Tom Riley will explore more than just the meaning of Art; they will explore the essential role of Art in our lives.  It promises to be an engaging evening for everyone who loves the fine arts.

David Resnick, director of instrumental music since 1993, is conductor of the Clarke Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, and Woodwind Ensemble. He holds a bachelor's degree in music education from St. Ambrose College and a master of music degree from Northern Illinois College. He has served as a clinician, adjudicator and guest conductor in Iowa, Illinois, and Nebraska. Along with his conducting duties, Resnick teaches electronic music, orchestration/arranging, and instrumental technique courses. He also performs on the saxophone, clarinet, and piano in several professional groups.

Tom Riley is an assistant professor of philosophy at Clarke. His areas of expertise include analytic philosophy, phenomenology and philosophy of science.  His recent research has been focused on the use of film in teaching philosophy, with forthcoming publications on the philosophy of Steven Spielberg and the teaching of ethics through film.  Riley teaches introductory philosophy courses, courses in ethics, philosophy of mind, The Matrix, and contemporary philosophy. An amateur musician, Riley holds a bachelor of arts degree from Creighton College, a Ph.L. from Catholic College of Louvain and a Ph.D. from the College of Iowa.

The Mackin-Mailander Lecture Series was established in the spring of 1997 after Clarke received gifts from two alums, Mary Mackin ’34 and Verna Slattery-Mailander ’20, to establish an endowed lecture series. The annual series consists of three lectures, including a prominent outside speaker, a faculty lecture and an alum lecture.
