A Musical Celebration of a Distinguished Career:
A Tribute to John Lease
John Lease

As part of the homecoming festivities, Clarke hosted over 130 alumni of the Clarke Collegiate Singers and, previously, the Clarke-Loras Singers to perform under the direction of and in honor of Professor Emeritus of Music John Lease, who recently retired after 45 years of service to Clarke. Alumni traveled from New York, California and everywhere in between to perform in the concert of Lease's favorite selections.  Hisae Hasegawa '78 and the Little Singers of Tokyo children's choir even performed at the concert from Japan via Skype. "I was humbled by the presence of so many choir alums who returned to sing at Homecoming," said Lease. "It was truly a family reunion. In the past when the Collegiate Singers went abroad, I always said Clarke was exporting its finest. This was shown once again by the love that was displayed in the reunion concert. Thank you - you will always be close to my heart." If you are interested in purchasing a CD from the event, please contact LaDonna Manternach '82 in Clarke's music department at by October 28.

Timesaver Program Celebrates 25 Years

In 1986, Clarke launched a program that changed the way adult education was offered in the Dubuque area. The vision: create a program that offered adults the opportunity to complete a bachelor's degree in a format that made it possible for students to balance work, family and other commitments.

Clarke's TimeSaver Adult Degree Programs were born. Today, TimeSaver Programs are the most recognized adult program in the region with over 1,000 alumni. Clarke currently offers eight majors in the TimeSaver format through hybrid course delivery that incorporates the best of both in-person and online learning.

This academic year, the TimeSaver Program celebrates it's 25th anniversary, beginning with a local TimeSaver student and alumni reception on November 1. For more details, visit or contact Scott Schneider in the adult studies office at

Convocation and Tree PlantingTree Planting Tradition Continues

At this year's Convocation and Tree Planting, an annual tradition at Clarke University, the class of 2012 named and dedicated their tree using a page from perhaps the most iconic book of their generation - Harry Potter. The tree is a burr oak and named "Whomping Willow" after the magical plant in the famed series.

As part of the tradition dating back to 1906, the freshman class also planted a tree which they will watch grow and develop during their years at Clarke. They will name and dedicate it when they are seniors.
