Hybrid Course Information

Why Hybrid?

What is a “Hybrid” course?

There are several different definitions but to put it simply, it is a combination of traditional face-to-face classroom meetings with online learning. According to UW Milwaukee who has done extensive research on hybrid courses through the “Hybrid Course Project”, a result from the “Curricular Redesign Grant Program”, states:

In “hybrid” classes, a significant amount of the course learning activity has been moved on-line, making it possible to reduce the amount of time spent in the classroom. Traditional face-to-face instruction is reduced but not eliminated.

How much computer and Internet experience do I need to succeed in a Hybrid course?

You will need some experience navigating and using the Internet. Important skills include knowing how to download files, attach document files to e-mail and use word processing software. Your instructor will provide you with an orientation to the class on the first scheduled class meeting (an on-line orientation learning module is available in your Moodle Learning Management System).  Technical skills required to successfully complete a hybrid course will not be in excess of the expectations for a face-to-face course.

What if I don’t have equipment needed at home to access a Hybrid course?

The technology center is Clarke’s primary open computer lab. This resource is available to all Clarke students during regular library hours:

  • Monday 7:30 A.M. – midnight
  • Tuesday 7:30 A.M. – midnight
  • Wednesday 7:30 A.M. – midnight
  • Thursday 7:30 A.M.- midnight
  • Friday 7:30 A.M. – 8 P.M.
  • Saturday 10 A.M. – 8 P.M.
  • Sunday 11 A.M. – midnight

Do students get the same information and content in a Hybrid course as they would in an on-campus course?

The education you receive from a hybrid class is the same as a face-to-face class. Discussion, collaboration, exchange of ideas, and testing may all take place on-line utilizing the Moodle Learning Management System.

How is attendance taken in a hybrid course?

Attendance for the class meeting on campus will follow the same policy as a traditional class. An on-line class absence may be identified as a missed assignment or inactivity in the course site, which the instructor is able to track. It is up to the instructor to determine their specific grading, attendance, and participation standards, which should be listed in their syllabus.

Is there an orientation for Hybrid courses?

Orientation is required for Hybrid courses. The Instructor will provide an orientation on the first scheduled day of class.  There will also be a Moodle Orientation learning module available in your Moodle Learning Management System.

Will I have an opportunity to evaluate the course and the instructor?

Your instructor will provide you with a link to an anonymous on-line evaluation at the end of each semester.

Note: Personal computer hardware, software, and internet connection problems are the responsibility of the student. Instructors will not be able to provide technical help for student computer problems. It’s the responsibility of the student to seek help for these problems. Technical problems need to be communicated with the instructor in a timely fashion (within 24 hours) and ordinarily will not excuse a student.
