Library staff will set a “hard due date” on the last Friday of classes each fall and spring semester. Items will not not receive a due date past that time, unless special permission is granted. This allows library staff to insure materials are returned before the end of finals week.

Undergraduate Students

  1. All library materials circulate with the exception of the archives, special collections, reference materials and periodicals. Materials from these collections may leave the library only at the discretion of the library director.
  2. The loan period for all other books to students is six weeks.
  3. Materials may be checked out at the circulation desk.
  4. Students may renew items one time as long as the item hasn’t been placed on hold.
  5. DVD’s are checked out for one week, and there is a limit of three DVD’s out at one time.  This includes series and seasons.
  6. Current periodicals may not be checked out. Back issues of periodicals may be checked out at the discretion of the library staff.  Please check at the Circulation Desk for permission to check out back issues.
  7. We do not charge overdue fines.  However, you will be billed for materials that are more than two weeks overdue to cover replacement costs plus a processing fee.

Graduate Students, Faculty and Staff

  1. All library materials circulate with the exception of the archives, special collections and reference materials. Materials from these collections may leave the library only at the discretion of the library director.

Community Members

  1. The Nicholas J. Schrup Library participates in the State Library of Iowa’s Open Access Program, which allows community members and anyone who lives in the state of Iowa to check out certain library materials with a valid identification such as a driver’s license. Faculty, staff, and students of all Dubuque area colleges: University of Dubuque, Loras College, Emmaus Bible College, and Wartburg Theological Seminary, members of the BVM order, Diocesan and Archdiocesan Clergy and personnel may also check out our regular circulating materials.
  2. Community members checking out materials under the open access policy may check out books and DVDs.
  3. Materials in the following collections do not circulate to community members: archives, special collections, reference materials, reserve, and library equipment (laptops, etc.).
  4. The loan period for books is 4 weeks with one renewal (assuming the item hasn’t been placed on hold).
  5. DVD’s are checked out for one week, and there is a limit of three DVD’s out at one time.  This includes series and seasons.
  6. There is a limit of 5 items (books and DVDs) out at one time.
